I am not an economist. I thoroughly enjoy Milton Friedman's other works and his various discussions on economics/ politics. This book is not geared towards a popular audience like his others but is still accessible to someone like me. Some parts of the book delve into technical data and charts but you can still gain meaningful knowledge without fully grasping the technical aspects. The book covers a century of monetary history so it is understandable lengthy, but it also has numerous charts and extensive footnotes at the bottom of most pages, which makes the reading go by fairly quickly. Do not pass up this unique and intriguing opportunity because of the books length or technical discussions.Friedman and Schwartz lay out clear, logical arguments to show the importance of monetary policy on the economy, They cover all of the panics and pay substantial attention to the great depression, offering unconventional views with logic demonstrating why the typical views are misguided. They also weave politics into the narrative and demonstrate the significance of not only what the policies are, but who is in charge. They contend the history of the US (and the world) would have been drastically different if Benjamin Strong didn't pass away as early as he did.The writing is clear and engaging, the passion of the authors shines throughout the entire narrative. While this book would be more preferable to an educated economist, it is still more than worthwhile for anyone interested in the history of America from a unique perspective and the topics covered are still highly relevant today.

Just started reading it but so far Freeman is an easy read. And I am not an economist. He is definitely a libertarian with minimal government ideas. Work reading since this is the foundation of where we are now.

"He who refuses to learn history is condemned to repeat it". Milton Friedman gives an easy to read version of History for the period 1867-1960. If we are wise enough to read and apply his lessons, we will be better off because of it. Especially good reading during this election cycle.

"A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960" by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz is an epic in economic literature. The authors concisely analyze nearly 100 years of monetary history and prove why monetary economics matter. Their work, originally published in 1963, offers immaculate insight into endogenous and exogenous economic variables that shaped US history.When reviewing a classic text it is important to test it on two criteria: 1) it's ingenuity; and, 2) it's validity. In regards to ingenuity "Monetary History" paved the way towards a statistically grounded analysis of macroeconomics (in this case monetary theory). While "Monetary History" was groundbreaking it's truly memorable aspect is Ch7's "The Great Contraction". This chapter, which is now known as the money hypothesis, revolutionized the way economists thought about the GreatDeprhttp://www.amazon.com/review/R1C118WNLAM4I/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=0691137943&nodeID=#wasThisHelpfulession. Ultimately, this analysis proved to be incorrect.Why the work remains a classic, even though flawed, is because the sheer difficulty in producing such a feat. Friedman and Schwartz managed to put together a comprehensive 100 year monetary history in (a short) 700 pages. The amount of research required to take on such a project is hard to grasp. The footnotes in the "Monetary History" give a small glimpse into how much work was required to create this book. They alone are the size of a mid-sized economic text. Throughout the text the authors synthesis a wide range of evidence, often being forced to recalculate the statistics given to them, and somehow come out with a fairly consistent history.The work is so encompassing it is impossible in an Amazon book review to point out all of the prescient ideas presented in a "Monetary History". Here is a short list off the top of my head: 1) money matters in the short-run; 2) active gov't policy can prevent bank panics if correctly implemented; 3) Consistent misperception regarding economics have OFTEN created bad policy (both in the private and public sphere); 4) the gold standard was never good (and we never had anything near an ACTUAL gold standard); 5) An excellent review of business cycle contractions between 1844-1960; 6)Everything you wanted to know about the composition of banking mechanisms from 1867-1960. There are many, many more...Friedman's "Monetary History" analysis does occasionally feel awkward (this tends to happen when his quantitative analysis does not account for history and he is forced to make qualitative assumptions). 1) The entire Great Contraction rested on the qualitative factor of not having a 'Great Man' running the Federal Reserve; 2) Deflation existed side by side with rapid economic expansion in the 1880's, which Friedman finds interesting, but no attempt is made to ascertain whether monetary issues had any recessionary effects on potential growth; 3) The entire 48-60' analysis exerts a strong ideological stance that did not seem to exist in the earlier chapters. (many more minor hiccups exist and for the most part Friedman is willing to admit when he cannot reasonably prove causation).However, two major problems exist in the "Monetary History".1) The assumption that money does not matter in the long-run is unsupported through their analysis. Friedman and Schwartz fail to find any long lasting effects regarding changes in the price level and money stock to changes in economic activity. This view, which is a very simple look at correlations, is essentially embracing a negation. They fail to find a connection between monetary economics and business cycles so it must not exist. Though this view has little empirical evidence it is made several times throughout the work (and in almost every case the statement seems to be completely out of place). The claim that money is 'neutral' has forever changed economics by being included in the Neoclassical Synthesis.2) Friedman's chapter on the velocity of money is by far the weakest part of his text. After going on for ~700 pages with precise attention to quantitative analysis Friedman is forced to argue, in a mere 3 pages, that changes in velocity must be due to rational expectations (with little empirical evidence). Friedman's assumption that Velocity exhibits a secular decline with rising income is CRUCIAL when analyzing Monetarism. The Quantity Theory of Money states: Money*Velocity=Price*Output --- M*V=P*Y (this is a rearrangement of Fisher's equation -- See Michael Emmett Bradely's review for a far superior theoretical analysis of this equation). If Velocity can be considered constant then changes in M = changes in P*Y. This means all that is needed to have stable business cycles is an unchanging, or better yet a slightly increasing, money supply. HOWEVER, this flawed assumption is why Monetarism is so difficult to implement into policy. Friedman's tentative assumption in his "Monetary History" became the dogma of Monetarism."A Monetary History of the US, 1867-1960" is a revolutionary, albeit flawed, canon in economic literature.

This analysis provides outstanding insight into the inherent deficiencies of the fiat money system (not based on a precious metal (gold) - only based on government fiat). The Federal Reserve utilizes the fiat money system to facilitate "controlled inflation" which has resulted in the depreciation of the US dollar by over 98% since Roosevelt's election. Gold was worth $20 an ounce in 1932. It is now worth approximately $1300. Do the math [(o.o5 - 0.001) / 0.05].Although the book covers the time period between 1857 and 1960, it applies to the situation today to an even greater degree than when it was written in 1963.

The Israelis and the victims, if somewhat idealized, are drawn with complexity. In contrast, the brief, first-person Palestinian perspectives are flat and distant, with little sense of the Palestinian experience: the Arab doctor is perfect, and the teenage suicide bomber and his mentor are ignorant, poor, filled with hate, and trying to be martyrs. I didn't leave my family and go away to boarding school. But I related to this story as an African American girl who bussed to an all white high school a few miles away from my lower income, all-black neighborhood. I suspect children who go to their zoned schools I their own neighborhoods where they are in the minority will also relate. Because this is not about going away to school. It's about coming of age as a fish out of water in a sea of whiteness. I love that Ant never let go of who he was but also was smart enough to be open to changes in his vantage point. The writing is crisp and sounds like it comes from the 15 yo protagonist that is Ant who endures the bumps and hard kicks of growing up a young black boy in America. Entertaining and illuminating.

We met the author, Brian at Scaramouche in Tortola before we sailed to Anegada. I downloaded his book from Amazon so that I could discuss it with him when we got back on Saturday. Good read and a great discussion.Black Boy White School is a coming of age novel about a young man who tries to make something of himself and soon finds himself belonging in neither place--he doesn't fit in where he is and has changed too much to fit in where he came from. It's a great YA novel for your kids to read on summer vacation.I found it much different than other coming of age novels--To Kill a Mockingbird, Sounder, Tom Sawyer, Where the Red Fern Grows, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, etc--in that I could relate to Ant, the main character. But like I told Brian, it's probably because I read the other ones in school and read this one as an adult.There is some foul language, so consider yourself warned if you are concerned about such matters. Considering the character and setting, it was appropriate.

This is the summer reading assignment at the school where I work, and I'm looking forward to hearing my students' reactions in September. Personally, I found the book to be a thought-provoking page-turner. The writing is accessible and has a strong voice, and the characters are sympathetic. I hope there's a sequel so that some of the characters can be developed even further. I hear from a lot of young people that their favorite genre is "realistic fiction," and this book seems to fit that bill. I bought the book for Kindle but actually wish I'd bought a paper copy so I could loan it out more readily.

I was pleased with the story, but I was displeased with the ending, Ant/Tony can be a character like Henry Rawlings, Walter Mosley fans will understand,even though fictional; I need to know what happened to him! Think about it Brian F Walker!

I initially bought this book for my 11yr old son who attends a private school and often expresses feelings of not fitting in anywhere. Once I read the 1st few pages I realized it wasnt a book he could grasp right away but I myself couldn't put it down. The book touches real world situations and will be relatable to anyone who may have made changes in their lives, whether positive or negative, deliberate or by accident. It can be inspiring to the young adult who feels they are different from everyone. I would recommend this book for ages of 14 and up. Powerful read.

The book was well written and I enjoyed it. Most people have no clue how scary growing up in the hood can be. Anthony found a way out.

Practical Data Science is a fun interesting book.. There are parts that lost me.... like watching a ball under the three shells kind of thing... but-- the 70% of the book that I DID get is remarkable. I learned many things that I will put to use. Well worth the price of the book. For example-- I loved the lookup vectors to change values.. very interesting graphs. This book does not waste your time. Hopefully soon I can grasp everything. Good job. I recommend for all R users. I love that the examples are about real business situations and not plant life.

This book is what I was looking for for my new job as a Credit Risk Data Modeler (basically data science applied to credit problems). It's coverage is broad, but deep and applied enough that I have been able to apply its contents in my day-to-day work. I look forward to a second edition which will hopefully rectify the following:Earlier in the book it seemed the authors took great pains to explain in layman's terms the various statistical elements of the topic they were covering. They provided very clear and meaningful explanations which made a lot of sense of complex topics. But later in the book it seemed that that approach largely went out the window and they started using more technical boiler plate to describe the various statistical tests and procedures. Rather than perhaps give the technical boilerplate (as you'd see it in a textbook) and then elaborate on it with a more human-centric explanation, they would just leave it at the nearly impervious technical description and then proceed to explain how to conduct the test/procedure/etc in R. But without understanding of what you're trying to accomplish and why, it's hard to write the code to actually do it. Keep in mind that I'm relatively well prepared for this book too, having had as much stats and econometrics as I could fit into my four-year degree. If I found some sections of the book too technical to understand then it seems likely that the book would benefit from some additional explanation and discussion in those later sections.Also, I have a good deal of "boots on the ground" experience with this book in my attempts to apply it in my daily work. I've found that it is useful, but could be more useful if there was more discussion of various practical problems. For instance, much of my work is focused on producing a predictive model of likelihood of charge-off. I.e., if we approve and fund this application, how likely is it to perform or charge-off. The book shares some high-level approaches to finding problems in data (using plots and summaries), fixing those problems using various techniques, selecting variables, and how to conduct the statistical modeling (logistic in my case). But it fails to really tie those areas together beyond the high-level. For instance, what are the assumptions of a logistic regression? How do you resolve issues in your data to ensure that you meet those assumptions and can perform a valid logistic regression? How do you really select variables when you're faced with at least 20 possibilities (and potentially many many more if you count interaction terms, unfixed variables, and variables which have been fixed in different ways)?I suppose, for what it was, that it is "mission accomplished." I'd just like to see a lot more. Perhaps there's need for a second volume? Perhaps "Advanced Practical Data Science with R?" Either this book could have a second edition with a lot more content covering finding data problems, resolving those problems intelligently (for instance, resolving missing data is basically left as "either drop the effected records" or "use the mean as a replacement or the missing value," but there are alternative methods which may be more suitable), what data problems will cause issues in OLS regression, logistic regression, and machine learning; And how to practically select variables and a model. I feel like the book gave me some tools to apply (like a small box of tools you might purchase from a hardware store), but left a lot out. So now I'm in deep water trying to figure out why my logistic regression isn't predictive enough and what I can do about it. Is it the data and how I fixed variables? Is it the variables I've selected? Should I have used automated variable selection techniques? Or just manually tried different variables? How does an experienced practitioner approach these problems? I know they iterate: explore data, clean data, select variables, select model, test model, look at data, change data, change variables, etc... but practically speaking what does it look like? In the book they offer a hand-coded basic variable selection script, and mention that one could also use stepwise variable selection. In the real world I'm reasonably sure that this is not actually done--mostly because their selection script does about as well as stepwise at selecting appropriate variables. There are many other better ways of selecting variables, I've discovered, and I wish that they'd discussed some of those ways (pros and cons), and shown how to conduct them in a meaningful fashion. Same thing with building a model. In my case, I have a whole bunch of variables, limited data (about 2000 records, with the desired outcome only occurring in 120 of those), and the automated tools (various R packages I've discovered and applied) either take a long time to run and/or yield poor results. But if not automated tools then what? Manually add variables and ANOVA test the difference between the first and second model?I'd just like more...more discussion and elaboration and examples of how practical data science is conducted. This book seems like it does a fantastic job as an introduction to the topic, but you'll quickly find that you'll be in deep water without a clue how to swim--as in my case. You'll be left to your own devices, and find yourself wishing, as I do, that there was more in the book (or another book) that I could study after this one which would help take me from beginner data scientist to intermediate.Overall, I'm very glad I bought and read the book.

Hands-on textbook that covers pretty much all aspects of data science (with keen attention to business demands). Importantly, it doesn't shy away from discussing statistical details behind the most common routines in machine learning, which I really appreciated as I was tired of typical DS books that take a black box approach that just shows "how" without explaining the "why". I think it's worth having a copy of this book irrespective of whether you are a beginner to data science or a veteran. Highly recommended!If you buy a hard copy, I would also recommend having a look at the colorful figures in the companion soft copy of the book.
