When I bought this book, I had the fear that there's going to be a rehash of content that has already appeared in Alien Vault whose content was also a rehash of an earlier book called The Book of Alien. With the book in hand, I do see that there are duplication but it's perhaps unavoidable because it covers all the four films from the franchise. Duplication mainly comes the from the first film with some similar pictures and stories from Alien Vault being reused, just laid out differently. For me, it's not a major bummer because the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.Alien the Archive is presented as a huge 304-page hardcover published by Titan Books, who have also recently released another Alien-related book called The Art of Alien: Isolation, an awesome video game artbook by the way. This is a visually driven book with the large pictures and supporting text. From cover to cover, it's filled with wonderful photographs and artworks that are gloriously reproduced on the huge pages. The book starts off an interesting analysis of Sigourney Weaver's character Ellen Ripley before going into the specific films. It looks at the casting and at how Ripley had evolved in the Alien universe. It's a nice way to connect the films together using a common element.Content for each film features the history and production process, the cast, designs for the environment, spaceships, and the alien, all in the at order. The text overall is insightful and informative. However, history for each film is rather brief but this isn't a detailed production diary so it's not surprising. The other text comes in the form of interviews, captions and commentary explaining the designs, filming process and the work that is done. The paragraphs here and there plus snippets of text all add up to a huge amount of content to read. The text reveals interesting details like how they construct the spaceships, art direction, the artists who are involved, difficulties on filming Alien 3, creating of sets and of course the alien, and the different aspects that each film faces. The behind the scenes photographs are really great and fun to look at. You can see the actual models for spaceships and sets, alien suits, many of the alien props including the mechanical parts that control the movements, actors, the filming process and more. There are many new pictures that I've not seen before because I've not seen companion books for the second to fourth film. The included artworks are fantastic. There are artworks from Chris Foss, Moebius, H.R. Giger and other artists. H.R. Giger contribution is the most significant with designs for the alien, its environment and other elements. You'll also see concept art and sketches for the spaceship interiors, vehicles, props, storyboards and physical models such as maquettes and miniatures. This is a terrific companion to the Alien franchise. Highly recommended to the fans.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

With the 35th anniversary of the original Alien this year, the fandom has been buzzing with life, uniting fans of all ages; one and all. The original film turned 35 years of age this past May and got a proper Blu-ray re-release, and the critically acclaimed video game, Alien: Isolation was released earlier this month to great fanfare and raving reviews. A cinema franchise whose roots trace back nearly half of a century is suddenly reborn, to new breaths of life and longevity. An interesting side note, at the time of writing, the two best-selling Digital Arts books on Amazon were both Alien: this title, and The Art of Alien: Isolation (which I also own, and gave a positive review for.) What would a 35th anniversary be without some proper way to celebrate it? I feel that this book is exactly that, a proper celebration of the franchise for fans to relive for years to come. Perfect? No, but altogether a mighty book worthy of its price tag. Alien has inspired countless films, books, video games, and other media in the nearly four decades of its existence, and this book allows fans of all merit to enjoy it even more in depth.I pre-ordered this book when it first became available on Amazon, and to be fair I wasn't quite sure what I'd expect when it arrived yesterday (one whole day ahead of schedule, thanks Amazon!) I envisioned some sort of basic visual reference book detailing all four films, using recycled pictures and art to sell copies. Needless to say my expectations were surpassed. I was beyond happy with my purchase; I was quite literally blown away from cover to cover, not just from the content, or the detail, but with how the book is presented. This is a giant, heavy coffee table book, with a beautiful dust jacket: On the front, an early concept painting of H.R. Giger's revolutionary, eponymous Alien design. On the back, are four mini, glossy posters; one for each film, and the frosted, cream colored paper has a handsome text accompaniment. Underneath the jacket is a nice gold-colored cover with what appears to be one of Ridley Scott's storyboards for Alien. The book is divided into four main chapters, one for each film, and each chapter having a sub-chapter detailing a certain topic about the particular film. The bulk of the information contained inside the book is located in the first chapter, for Alien; arguably the most important film in the series. Each chapter thoroughly details the entire process for how each film was painstakingly created--every aspect of each film is considered, showcased, and explained in great detail in this book.As far as new content goes, there are plenty of pictures in this book that I haven't seen before (and out of 20 years being alive, I have been an active Alien fan for at least 15 of those) but if you've spent your time researching the films, particularly the first, you'll know that good quality images of the creative process of the movies are few and far between, or private. This book is loaded with pictures, concept art, renders, models, costumes, sets, design studies, aesthetics, etc. I doubt much was left out of the 20th Century Fox archives while this book was being put together. There are some neat shots of James Remar, the original actor who played Hicks, in the book. Also featured are many abandoned concepts from the third film, some of which would be carried over to Resurrection, such as a swimming xenomorph. As expected, the concept art for the first two films took up the bulk of the chapters, featuring pieces from legendary artists such as Moebius, Chris Foss, Syd Mead, Ron Cobb, and of course, the late great H.R. Giger. Also included was artwork from the directors themselves, which surprised me. I'd seen some of Ridley's storyboards, but never seen any of Cameron's artwork-- suffice to say, he is a true artistic mind worthy of his merits.Visually, this book is stunning. Page after page after page of beautiful artwork, behind the scenes pictures, and continuity stills from the set fill up this book. The book isn't just a visual spectacle, as the written portion of it is just as detailed. There are dozens and dozens of interviews quoted in the text. And from what I understand, a few of the interviews are new; recently collected by Mark Salisbury (who has strangely been removed from both the cover and the Amazon page as the author, only to be replaced with "Titan Books.") Every picture in the book has a caption that explains it in great detail and the reader can rest assured that the author did his homework. This book did a great job at explaining and discussing the entire franchise, and all aspects of it, in detail, but didn't ramble or rant. Not much has to be said about the series, but this book said plenty, and did so wonderfully. I didn't find any of the text to be drawn out, incorrect, or featuring too much of the author's opinion one way or another (though I would assume that while reading this $35 boneyard of trees you would have at least some marginal interest or positive thoughts about the films) but it did focus greatly on a lot of the thematic elements, the emotion and the energy of each film; some of the metaphorical or mental aspects behind the films that you can't craft from physicality, but rather, create via physicality: the corridors of the Nostromo are cold and lifeless but very much worn; the passages on Fury 161 are equally cold and lifeless , but carry different emotions in them than the Nostromo did. Such comparisons are made in the book and the author digs deep into the treasure trove of resource material to bring these visions to life, or at least to print. One of the coolest pieces of trivia that I learned from my initial skimming of the book was that Steven Spielberg was originally tapped to direct Alien in 1978, but prior engagements prevented him from doing so. The book is dotted with plenty of interesting trivia, little-known facts, and a menagerie of visual/textual resources that allow this book to take an authoritative direction that doesn't veer into the realm of being too "preachy" or full of itself. On a side note, I'm certain that this book will fall under scrutiny for being similar to Alien Vault: The Definitive Story of the Making of the Film, which in itself was a solid title in my opinion, but lacked authoritative sources and much in the way of new material or information. It had some cool goodies like blueprints, stickers, and mini posters, but anybody who owned the Alien Anthology Blu-ray would have already had access to all the material in the book. That said, I hope people can lift the stigma and give this one a chance, as it focuses on all four films, not just the first. All in all, while it certainly isn't perfect and there are no doubt things that the bean-counters might gripe about, this entire book represents an exceptional value for the price, and will provide fans of all status, casual to die-hard, many hours of entertainment value. No expense spared, and certainly worthy of its title, "The Ultimate Guide." I spent a couple hours skimming through it and reading certain sections, and there is still plenty to read and learn from this book. I imagine further reads would shed more light into even more information to indulge in.Really hit this one out of the park, a virtually flawless presentation of the films.

The This thick, hardbound book is an unfortunate tease for those who haven't already viewed the special features in Alien Quadrilogy/Anthology. It feels hastily assembled and inattentively edited; much of the photography is familiar, too low resolution for the size of the pages, and has mismatched captions. Kind of a slap in the face for a book which calls itself an Archive for such a visually oriented franchise. It's more of a coffee table book than anything fans will find new or interesting. The content is more exhausted than exhaustive. Unfortunate.

This is definitely worth the money for any ALIEN fans. It's a great quality hardback with glossy pages. But the content of course is the best part. Awesome photos and just the right amount of info included.

Alien...Aliens...Alien 3...Alien Resurrection...they are all there in this gorgeous, illustrated hardcover book. I was nervous about buying this after having binding issues from these kind of movie books purchased before on Amazon, but no problems here. The pictures and writings are as amazing as the films themselves. It's like an audio commentary companion for all four of the classic films. Now all we're missing is a new Alien film! Come on!!!

If you are an Alien fan, I mean a real hands down, die hard fan! You will love this book! It has so much info about, all the Alien movies, it incredible! Plus lots & lots of photo's, to browse through! Sure it's a bit pricy, but this is a one of a kind, book that really, gets your attention!I really enjoy it, I hope you do too!

I bought this as a reference while working as a field engineer for offshore support vessels. It gives you a good understanding of ship design and how vessels and their cargo will react based on wave amplitude, frequency, etc. Definitely a good read and the printed pages included were awesome.

Condition of the book was better than expected and the book itself is helpful for anyone looking into naval architecture and it is a simple read with easy to understand examples.

I am a Mechanical Engineer looking at ship design. This book looks to be an excellent resource beyond the fluid dynamics courses I had in college.

The information is through and I assune somewhat complete, if you plan to do a reconstruction of the aircraft carrier Nimitz or may older issues such as the Enterprise. However for anything under 250 feet, the book is virtually not applicable. I am currently refitting a 40' aftcabin crusier that is mahogany and oak. I was hoping to find information on newer reconstruction methods however, this book only deals in theory pertaining to large vessels and classical construction methodology.

With the possible exception of SNAME's "Principles of Naval Architecture," "Introduction to Naval Architecture" is the perfect introductory text for any naval architecture/marine engineering student. It includes brief but dense overviews of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, ship structure, resistance, and propulsion. While there are more detailed texts for each of the above topics (again, SNAME's PNA does a good job as a reference, but not so much as a text, and Harvald's "Resistance and Propulsion of Ships" is THE text for that topic), it is the perfect source for equations, derivations, illustrations, graphs, and, most importantly, example problems. It's very hard to find any clear examples of NA problems in most texts - the examples in this book are worked through step by step, which makes comprehension a breeze. If you're studying or working in the field of naval architecture, this book is a necessary addition to your reference library.

"Introduction to Naval Architecture" provides a unique approach to ship design. Although this approach is quantitative and mathematically "intense", Gillmer also provides qualitative description within certain chapters. Ultimately, for the purposes of clarity and a definitive understanding of basic ship design, this work is best coupled with "Introduction to Naval Architecture" (E.C. Tupper), which provides a "descriptive" perspective. The Gillmer and Johnson referenece is highly recommended for those individuals who have prior knowledge of naval architecture, and a strong foundation in mathematics; otherwise, the aforementioned coupling of two references becomes necessary. Please note: This is my opinion as a high school Senior completing an independent research project within the field of naval architecture.

This is a great text for everyone. I think Zubaly's Applied Naval Architecture does a slightly better job in presenting the coefficients, but in every other respect, this text is superior. Zubaly and this text are weak in the details of seakeeping, but there are several other specific seakeeping texts, namely Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Battacharia (I know I misspelled his name)

This book is great for starters in Naval Architecture and Engineering.I am a Naval Engineering Student and usually borrow this book from the library. But I liked it so much that I bought it for me to have one at home. There is introduction about stability, resistance of material, etc.

Unholy Silence: Covering Up the Sins of the FathersBy Father Kevin Lee

I am not the first person to identify serious flaws in the way the Catholic Church deals with allegations of sexual abuse. That priests are living double-lives and contradictions are apparent in the way they actually live with the way they profess to live is not in dispute.

In her scandalous but rarely read 2005 book, Priests in Love, Jane Anderson makes an admission to widespread sexual infidelity amongst Australian Catholic clergy.

The author surveyed thousands of priests promised anonymity and presented a compendium of confessions from men who have turned their back on mandatory celibacy to follow their own consciences.

She rightly observed that “prior to Vatican Council II (1962-65) the liturgical practice reflected the firm belief that the Mass was a sacrifice in which the priest and his actions were distinctly separate from the people. Everything was centred on the priest at the altar.” [1]

The priest was separated from the people and his role was so central to the lives of Catholics that they became revered as cultic leaders, almost the personification of Jesus on earth.

The publicly promoted premise behind the insistence on celibacy was that the priest needed to be as pure and spotless as the offerings that he handled. A vow of chastity was what qualified a man to hold such an esteemed preaching position within the church.

Of course, to maintain this façade, the priest must at least appear to be chaste even if he were not. Bishops, who rely on a number of such willing men to celebrate the daily Mass, will never pry into the priests’ personal lives to determine whether or not he was, for fear of finding out to the contrary.

Today, in Catholic parishes throughout the world and particularly in Australia, men are pretending to be celibate in order to hold the exalted office of priest. They are keeping up the image for a church that is losing its way in secular society. Catholicism is significantly losing its influence with the community and even with its own remnant adherents.

If it were not for its ubiquitous parochial school system and the government grants sustaining them, the Catholic Church would have died out long ago.

The ongoing financial success and academic leadership of Catholic schools are propping up the Church’s flagging identity and topping up the church coffers depleted after endless sexual abuse compensation claims.

But the church still needs to have enough men willing to celebrate the Sunday Mass o give the impression that it is business as usual. It doesn’t matter whether or not these men are in fact celibate, as long as they look like they are.

No one within the organisation speaks publicly about this although most are aware of the hypocrisy.
I should know…

I was one of them.

Very thorough book for solid "first year" understanding of electrical principals. Great for an amateur hobbyist looking to get a little more knowledge under their belt. The book is basically a TL;DR for an electrical engineering degree.

For a little background, I own a previous paperback edition of this book from years ago which is buried in storage. As I look into making several projects now that my 3D printer build is complete, I find myself in need of a refresher. I was overjoyed to see a new edition of this book had been released and was available on kindle. Now 20 minutes and 14 pages into the book I've given up and will be buying the paperback edition. In those first 14 pages I encountered 2 places where example calculations should have been displayed and an instance where the symbol for a battery was to be shown. All three situations just had a blank space with references in the text to the missing information the only indication that something was missing . As a result it's not worth my time to continue since I'm not willing to deal with the frustration of this which I assume will continue through out the text. It's a shame too, since I thought the index was well laid out, liked the hot links within the text that take you to other referenced sections of the book and know that the content of the paper edition is probably outstanding. Thank goodness that Prime will get the physical book to me quickly.04/20/16 Edit: I've raised the rating of this book from 1 to 3 since I received the physical edition of the book which is awsome and I realize the 1 rating was a little harsh. That being said, I firmly believe that if you are going to publish a kindle edition of a nonfiction book, it must be identical to the physical edition. Someone purchasing the kindle edition should be able to receive the exact same information in a kindle edition as in a physical edition. If you can't publish a book like that, I don't think it should be published as a kindle at all.I've also added a couple of images from the physical and the kindle edition of the book to illustrate the issue that I'm talking about.

I teach an introductory class in electronics at a small university. The class is intended for scientists, not electrical engineers; so the emphasis is on basic knowledge, practical troubleshooting skills, and design. I've used the Second Edition of this book a number of times with some satisfaction simply because the book covered most of what I needed. It was a great reference book for just about anything someone would want to know about electronics. However, there were some notable gaps in the Second Edition that I typically teach in an electronics class; specifically, I teach a section on transducers and microcontrollers. With the Third Edition, there are new sections on sensors (transducers) and microcontrollers, and now this book has everything in it that I could possibly want to teach. I've been using the Arduino for class the last couple of years because most scientists would use a microcontroller to design a piece of equipment instead of discrete gates and logic chips. So with these new additions, I cannot imagine any other book that would be needed for a class. So from this point forward, I will be using this book for EVERY electronics class that I teach. The detail in the book is in-depth enough for folks who want to know how everything works, BUT the person who wants to skip past the theory can certainly do that and STILL learn a lot from this book. As I teach, I tend to skip around within the book to cover what is important to me. The chapters are designed to be somewhat modular; for instance, I can teach the basics of analog electronics and transistors and then move to microcontrollers without necessarily having to spend a lot of time time on discrete logic chips. There are lots of illustrations and graphs; so those who need to see something to understand it will be pleased. There is also a lot of detail on practical things like motors that generally are NOT in an electronics book. The sections on household electricity are excellent and very useful, since some equipment/inventions would require mains power. So knowing how to be safe around it and how to use it properly is important.I haven't read every single page yet and marked it up. In a book this size, I am sure there will be some typographical errors along the way and maybe even a mistake or two in explaining something. But I would still say this book is the BEST practical book on electronics out there. Kudos to Mr Scherz and Dr. Monk. You've taken an excellent book and modernized it in a great way for the current day.In short, for a 1000 page book, anyone who buys this is getting a bargain. It's the BEST.
