Whether you’re trans, gay, lesbian, bi, queer, questioning, or straight, this winner of the Stonewall Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award will make you marvel at the beauty of human connection and the irrepressible nature of love.

Everyone has that one line they swear they’ll never cross, the one thing they say they’ll never do. We draw the line. Maybe we even believe it.

Sage Hendricks was my line.

Logan Witherspoon befriends Sage Hendricks at a time when he no longer trusts or believes in people. As time goes on, he finds himself drawn to Sage, pulled in by her deep, but sexy feminine voice and her constant smile. Eventually Logan’s feelings for Sage grow so strong that he can’t resist kissing her. Moments later, he wishes he never had. Sage finally discloses her big secret: she was born a boy. Enraged, frightened, and feeling betrayed, Logan lashes out at Sage. Once his anger has cooled, however, his regrets lead him to attempt to rekindle their friendship. But it’s hard to replace something that’s been broken—and it’s even harder to find your way back to friendship when you began with love.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up—A small-town Missouri boy's world is rocked when he falls for the new girl at school, and she eventually confesses that she is a biological male. Logan's world is small, as is his mind at first, but throughout the book he grows to accept and love Sage for who—not what—she is. This remarkable book takes a hard look at the difficulties and pain experienced by young male-to-female transsexuals from an easily relatable perspective, as Julie Ann Peters did in Luna (Little, Brown, 2004). Logan is a conservative 18-year-old Everyman whose generic voice isn't—and doesn't need to be—anything special; although readers follow his growth, it is Sage's story that is truly important. A remarkably "clean" book dealing with sexuality and identity, this is neither preachy nor didactic while directly challenging prejudice and intolerance. With realistic characters and situations, it is a first purchase for all high school collections, and could easily be given to middle school readers who are undaunted by its length.—Rhona Campbell, Washington, DC Public Library

From Booklist
Transsexuality is the issue in this candid novel told from the viewpoint of Logan, a high-school senior in a small Missouri town. The story quickly moves from Logan’s attraction to Sage, a cute, strange new girl at school, to his shock at the discovery that Sage was born male and is in transition to become a female. More than anything, Logan worries that once Sage’s identity is revealed, people will think that he is gay for being attracted to a boy. Then Sage attempts suicide, and Logan feels guilty about failing her. Unlike Sage’s brutal father, though, Logan never denies that Sage is a “she.” The story is long and repetitive, and the messages are overt, but many teens—both those familiar with transgender issues and those who are not—will welcome the honest take on a rarely explored subject. The biological facts about hormones and Sage’s changing body are woven in, and Katcher clearly dramatizes the characters’ secrets, lies, shame, and denial, as well as the cruel prejudice they experience with family and friends. Grades 9-12. --Hazel Rochman

From the Back Cover

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote her most famous prose work, La Respuesta a Sor Filotea, in 1691 in response to her bishop's injunction against her intellectual pursuits. A passionate and subversive defense of the rights of women to study, to teach, and to write, it predates by almost a century and a half serious writings on any continent about the position and education of women. Moreover, notes Ilan Stavans in his introduction, it has become "a cornerstone of Hispanic-American identity ... at once a chronicle of the tense gender relations in the Western Hemisphere, a rich portrait of the social behavior that prevailed more than a century before independence from Spain was gained in 1810, and the very first intellectual autobiography written by a criolla in a hemisphere known for its solipsism, introversion, and allergy to public confessions. Also included in this wide-ranging selection is a new translation of Sor Juana's masterpiece, the epistemological poem "Primero Sueno", as well as revealing autobiographical sonnets, reverential religious poetry, secular love poems (which have excited speculation through three centuries), playful verses, and lyrical tributes to New World culture that are among the earliest writings celebrating the people and the customs of this hemisphere.

Absolutely love the “Response to Sor Filotea.” An extremely sophisticated and funny response (background needed). I find the translations extremely helpful when it comes to imagery, diction, and the sorts, but if you’re asked to interpret sound and sense or rhythm and rhyme, then the translations by any translator will never do. Of course, if you’re asked for the latter, then you could always sound out the Spanish version and not actually know what the word means (possibly). I only mention this for anyone who is buying this for class; otherwise, amazing read and experience. I envy her knowledge and ability.

Coming from someone who has a tattoo of one of Sor Juana's signatures on her back and is always on the lookout for anything and everything printed about her, take my word for it: this is simply the best translation of Sor Juana's "Primero Sueño" and other poems. To make it short and sweet, I'll tell you this: I understood the poem much more reading the English translation than reading the original in Spanish. If you're bilingual, you'll notice this right away.Sor Juana is hard to understand but this perfect little volume will make it all clearer for you. It includes mythological and other obscure references at the end and is absoultely beautifully translated. It also has a prologue that will acquaint you better with Sor Juana's life and work. The Penguin edition is a perfect introduction to Sor Juana, as it includes her magnificent and unrivalled poem "Primero Sueño" and her Protest, which is a kind of autobiography.

Sor Juana is an amazing woman, full of insight and grace. She is a historical figure that needs more attention. I will warn you, half the book is in Spanish and the other is in English. If you speak and read Spanish, that will give you the opportunity to read what she actually wrote (I'm jealous!). Overall great book, it arrived on time and in decent condition. I would really recommend to anyone!

Fabulous, bi-lingual edition of Sor Juana. Helps reduce dictionary checks for we whose 17th century Spanish is a bit rusty. As she might say, "Vosotros serais bendecidos."

An excellent selection of texts--from the "Response" to the long poem "First I Dream" to some wonderful short poems and the "loa" or dramatic prologue to the drama "The Divine Narcissus." Margaret Peden's translations are fluent and readable, and the Spanish is on facing pages so you see the original easily. Ilan Stavans' introduction is very helpful, giving the facts of Sor Juana's life (insofar as known), the complexities of the situation that the "Response" addresses, and some help with the context and conventions of her poetry. Sor Juana is an astounding writer--her subtlety and complexities unfold more and more as you read and reflect on her writings. The "Response" is a rhetorical complex defense of her position as a "learned" woman, gathering the rhetorical authority to defend herself out of the very sources (the Bible, church teachings) that were used to attack her and turning the persona under which her Bishop attacked her (a letter pretending to be by a fellow nun) into a deft weapon against him. She articulates a tradition of women's learning and turns a seemingly self-effacing self-limitation to the "philosophy of the kitchen" into a far-reaching claim to a unique female source of knowledge. The "loa" presents dramatically the complex interaction between a colonizing and colonized culture, native language and a Spanish that is becoming at home in the New World, and a native religion which is not simply abandoned for Catholicism but already contains truths which Catholicism confirms and validates even in the process of converting it. She is one of the great writers of the Seventeenth Century and especially interesting in relation to contemporary multicultural identities and cultural interactions.

Wonderful book, I love reading Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in Spanish and I wanted to share her poetry with an English speaking friend. This book was the solution for me because the translation is spotless and does not loose context nor shape. I highly recommend it.

This book contains the work of an American genius, saint, scholar, poet - a grand soul. Sor juana Inez del a Rosa - what a soul and mind. Her suffering fueled her mind to produce greatness, kindness and - despite the torment of lesser people, she endured and her spirit soared - and does for anyone who encounters her story and her work.

An insightful read.

Very disappointing that I have to buy this product. Marxs would be very upset.

This was the wrong book for me, but maybe it will be better for you: I was expecting more of a much more clear cut guide on how exactly to overthrow the current regime in order to create a utopian society in which class no longer exists. He does a great job of providing a lot of examples where other versions of communism are wrong and flawed, and why, but never really gives a decent tutorial on how to pragmatically instantiate marxism.. I almost got the feeling like the substrate of reality was such that you can never eliminate the "bourgeoisie snakes from within", perhaps that alluded to the idea that layering a Marxist structure on top of reality means that reality will always poke through, even after it has suffocated and starved enough?? I followed the author on Kindle, we'll see if he publishes a vol. 2 sometime soon!

Got my copy and pages 9 through 40 are inverted and upside down. The entire book is goofed up because of this. I'm not pleased.

The theological secular horror of our time. CIA Director John Brennen voted Communist. This should tell you something about the United States but you will only understand the current chaos of the US if you read the Manifesto, then read it again, and then reread the Manifesto. Annihilate all morality and all religion, establish Free Trade, Centralized all communication by the government, establish Democracy, annihilate Justice, Liberty, and Freedom all to support the New Jerusalem and monopoly of the World Market. Eliminate nationality, family and eliminate borders. Overturn and destroy the existing state of things! In the Manifesto the proletariat becomes more and more 'equalized', meaning reduced to nothing, powerlessness, silenced, in the scripted struggle. This is the real meaning behind the lie of Utopianism Marxist try to sell to people. No one person has more power than the other. You are all silenced and equalized. Think about that for two seconds and ponder the horror. Who has say in the Communist Marxist system? Only the bankers. Not even a billionaire like Trump cannot change the system in the US, so now you have some perspective your Marxist Neo Liberal professor did not give you. Marxism is based on One Totalitarian Government. Communism is a theological creation sold in a secular package to ideologues who don't read or understand Marx's theology.

I read The Communist Manifesto in college, at least two or three times, as part of history classes and even a couple English literature classes, to provide context. Yet, I don't know that I read it this closely back then, or that I took the time then to really think about the ideas and take notes (many, many notes). Back then, I was firm in my idea of "democracy good, communism bad," and eventually came to think of the Manifesto as purely a philosophical essay. But right now we are living in an age of economic disparity that is even sharper than The Gilded Age, when less than 1% of the world's population controls more than 95% of the wealth. And yet, few are really critiquing a capitalist system that sets in motion this inequality. And in looking at a communist plan for a manufacturing plant or a socialist state, there appears to be a lot more democracy and "will of the people" going on. I was already on the path of doing more research, but the Manifesto has inspired much more thought than I expected.

It's very light, which is great if you're packing it around. A very quick read, but I suspect that some readers may want the font to be larger. However, given the super low price, it was high quality.

Well, this literature has opened my eyes a bit toward Communists. I still am not a Communist if that's what you are wondering.

If politics, economy or life in general interest you - this is a must.
